Headmaster Mark Case Speaks to ABC Illawarra

08 October 2026

Recently, our Headmaster, Mr Case, joined Nick Rheinberger on ABC Illawarra Mornings to discuss the art of respectful debate and why critical thinking matters more than ever in the age of AI and social media.

They explored what makes a good argument: understanding what you are actually debating, constructing a clear case, using evidence and sound reasoning, and being prepared to listen to and truly understand a different perspective.

They also discussed the intellectual resilience needed to sit with ideas that challenge us, without bristling or taking disagreement personally; and to understand that often beneath a conflict about policies there are often values that connect us.

At Oxley, this is an important part of teaching students how to think, not what to think. As AI makes information increasingly accessible and social media algorithms amplify simple answers to complex problems, the ability to question, evaluate, challenge and make informed judgements becomes even more important.
